![]() ![]() I very much liked the distinctions of the Houses to which we were introduced in this first novel. The magical systems in place are believable and interesting, and I enjoyed the distinction between witchcraft and sorcery. The history and culture of this world is enough to fill many books, which of course Brust has done. But even more than him, I enjoyed the richness of the world in which he lives. ![]() ![]() The main character is rather three-dimensional enough, though, and I enjoyed his character. Amusing cardboard cutouts, but cardboard all the same. The secondary characters were not incredibly three-dimensional, but I suppose I will see more of them in other books (this is the first I read of his), so there will be more opportunity to learn about them and see how they are other than cardboard cutouts. ![]()
